Motorcycle riders will take a three-hour cruise with stops in memory of Cpl. Michael Mayne on Aug. 15.
Starting at Burlington Flats Veterans Memorial Park, the cavalcade will go south on state Route 51 to state Route 80, bound for the western shore of Otsego Lake, according to Lex Danyluk of Sherburne.
``We'll go up the west side of the lake and up to Richfield Springs, then take U.S. Route 20 west,'' he said.
The ride will begin and end at the park where six flags fly, one for each branch of the military. They were installed a few years ago by Mayne, of Burlington Flats, as his Eagle Scout project, and they flank an American flag.
Mayne lived across the road in a house that overlooks the green.
After graduating from Edmeston Central School in 2006, he joined the Army, made many friends and attainted the rank of corporal. On Feb. 23, he was killed while on patrol in Balad, Iraq, a loss that was keenly felt in the Edmeston-Burlington area.
A military funeral service at the school drew an overflow crowd.
Mayne rode a Harley over many of the roads that are part of the Aug. 15 ride, and it seemed like an appropriate way to honor his memory, said Alicia Bowen, business manager at Edmeston Central School.
``I'll be riding my 2008 Harley 1200,'' she said.
Danyluk, a Vietnam War veteran, said he never met Mayne, but learned of him after his passing. Danyluk said he rode in a procession during Mayne's burial service.
Danyluk and his wife, Donna, are members of American Legion Riders, Post 189, in Norwich, and ride in events to raise money for cancer research.
Riders on Aug. 15 will pay a $10 registration fee, and a portion of the money will go to Edmeston Central School to endow a scholarship in Mayne's name.
The fee will also cover a lunch at Gilligan's, a restaurant in Sherburne, before the riders return to Burlington Flats.
Danyluk said he would appreciate having a head count before the ride begins to help him make luncheon registrations.
His telephone number is 674-2980.
