MIDDLEFIELD _ A Brooklyn man awaiting a trial on drug charges was arrested Friday for allegedly beating up another man at the Otsego County jail in April.
Steven A. English, 24, has been in custody since June 4, 2008, on drug charges.
He attacked another male inmate April 26 by punching him repeatedly in the head, according to a media release from deputies.
The assaulted inmate suffered contusions and a broken nose, deputies said.
English was indicted by a grand jury and charged with second-degree assault, a felony. He was arrested on a similar charge in February for an alleged attack on a male inmate Dec. 3.
English, along with two other defendants, is awaiting trial on an enterprise corruption charge for alleged drug trafficking in the Oneonta area.
The crime of enterprise corruption, which was established by the state Legislature in 1986 to fight organized crime, is a class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
English also faces two counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance related to alleged crack sales Jan. 2 and 25 in the city of Oneonta.
He was earlier charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance after drugs and cash were allegedly found in his backpack near the Oneonta bus station on June 4, 2008.
His trial on the enterprise corruption and drug charges is scheduled for Aug. 17.
