The Oneonta City School District is reorganizing staffing at Wednesday's board of education meeting to better meet its needs and save money for local taxpayers, according to Oneonta Superintendent Michael Shea.
A teacher on special assignment, Coleen Lewis, is completing her internship in the curriculum department. She is being recommended for appointment as curriculum coordinator at a salary of $66,533, Shea said.
If appointed, effective July 1, she will resign her position as library media specialist at Greater Plains Elementary School, he said. That position is being filled by a reassignment of existing staff, he said.
Lewis' salary is being prorated to a 12-month position; she was previously being paid for 10 months, Shea said.
She will be working with current curriculum coordinator Karen Rowe.
Her assignments will include work being done by two part-timers who are retiring at the end of this school year. The part-timers had been writing and managing federal grants at a combined salary of about $28,000, Shea said. She will also be working with the technology department to help meet teachers' needs.
When reached on Tuesday, Lewis said she was looking forward to having a district-wide perspective on curriculum. She enjoyed working with teachers as a library media specialist. Now, she is looking forward to working with them on such things as the best way to integrate technology into the classroom, she said.
The district expects to save at least $8,000 from the move, Shea said.
Also on the agenda, special-education chairman Gary Koutnik, who is retiring at the end of the school year, is being hired as of July 1 as a 0.6-position psychologist.
At a salary of $34,378, he will fill a position held by a full-time staff member who retired earlier in the year at a savings of about $50,000, Shea said.
