Jefferson appoints principal

Staff Report

The Jefferson Central School board of education appointed a staff member to the recently established position of principal, according to a school press release.

Director of instructional support Jonathan Hillis, 33, will start in September, the release said. He was appointed at the regularly scheduled May 19 board of education meeting, and will be at a starting salary of $70,000. His current salary was not available.

Hillis recently completed his administrative internship at Jefferson through the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA). He served as an elementary teacher at Jefferson from 2005-08, and at Franklin Central School from 1998-2003, according to the release.

Hillis is a 1994 graduate of Morris Central School. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from St. John Fisher College in 1998, and a master's degree in education from State University of New York at Oneonta in 2003. He is enrolled in the Leadership Academy at MCLA and lives in Charlotteville.

"We're fortunate to have such a strong internal candidate for this new position," said Superintendent Carl Mummenthey.

"Mr. Hillis has a solid instructional background, a great interest in student development and sound leadership instincts," he said.

Hillis said in the release that he was "extremely fortunate" to have had an opportunity to complete his internship at Jefferson this year.

"I look forward to continuing to build relationships with all members of our local school community," he said.
