A Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School fifth-grader recently won the second annual Empire State Poetry Connection Fifth Grade Distance Learning Poetry Competition.
Julia Dudley, 11, won for her poems "Bad Occasion" and "Spring."
Five schools in the state participated, including CV-S and South Kortright. The competition took place last Wednesday via video conferencing.
Judging was based on a poem's structure, tone, diction and imagery; and the poet's audibility, clarity and expression, according to a media release from Otsego Northern Catskills BOCES in Stamford.
South Kortright's in-school winners were Megan Dengler, Kevin Jensen, Robert Kozak and Griffin Metzko. Cherry Valley-Springfield's in-school winners were Kyle Monahan, Zachariah O'Connor and Oliver Searles. All winners received plaques.
It is the second year of the event, and the program will continue next year, according to the release. Fifth-grade classes in schools with distance-learning hookups are invited to participate in next year's edition of the competition.
