Delhi professor gets Fulbright
DELHI _ A State University College of Technology at Delhi professor has been named a Fulbright Scholar, marking the first time a Delhi faculty member has earned the honor.
Linnea Goodwin Burwood, 55, of Delhi, said she will use the $25,000 award to conduct an historic treasure hunt in Russia.
"I found out I had won two weeks ago," Burwood said Friday. "When they called me, I thought they were kidding. It is such an honor to win a Fulbright.
"I have gotten to the point where I can say it out loud, but I still can't get my head around it," she said, laughing.
Burwood will travel in Russia next year conducting research on train trips taken to gather historical documents during the Russian Civil War.
"I want to do some research on a small event in 1921 that has never been studied," Burwood said.
The study will demonstrate pictorially and narratively nine decades of change in the region. Her studies will include researching documents stored for the Russian Revolution Museum, a project that was never realized by the Soviet government.
Burwood's project will build on her previous research dealing with anarchy and the Russian-American anarchist Alexander Berkman. She is working on a Berkman biography.
Burwood said that in 1921, there were plans to build a museum to document the 1917 revolution. She said people were sent out on several trains to gather information and artifacts.
"The people went out and brought stuff back, but the museum was never built," Burwood said. "I want to find out what they brought back and what happened to it. I want to know if it still exists or if it was destroyed."
Burwood said she became intrigued by the mystery after reading the diary of one of the collectors. She said the diary is part of the collection of the Institute for Social History in Amsterdam.
"It is a personal diary of the journey, but it is not a story of what they took out," she said. "It talks about the lives of the people during the civil war _ the depredation, the conditions and the lack of food. People were starving."
Burwood said materials gathered for the museum have never been studied or documented.
While she is living in Russia, she will be under the direction of the U.S. State Department.
"I have spent 26 years studying Russian history, but I have never lived in that culture," Burwood said.
She said she will have to go through a training process to learn what she can and can't do while in Russia, including not being allowed to drive.
"I am networking now with people I know in Moscow," Burwood said. "I am networking to find out what I will need."
Burwood said while she is there, she will stay in touch with her family via Skype _ a software application that allows users to make phone calls over the Internet _ and will be posting updates on the SUNY Delhi website.
She said her husband, Stephen Burwood, is the director of the Clark Center on International Education in South Kortright.
"(He) is absolutely over the moon about this," she said. "He thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread."
Joel Smith, the school's director of college advancement, said the campus is thrilled Burwood was named a Fulbright scholar.
"This is a tremendous honor for Dr. Burwood and brings national prominence to SUNY Delhi," President Candace Vancko said is a media release. "Dr. Burwood's selection recognizes her outstanding scholarship and will provide an important piece of an underexposed part of Russian history to Russia and the international community."
Smith said Burwood, during her eight years at SUNY Delhi, has co-chaired the college's Budget and Planning Committee for the last two years and has served on the College Retention Committee and the Academic Advising Committee. She is a member of the College Senate, which is SUNY Delhi's campus governance organization.
Burwood holds an associate's degree from Broome Community College and bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in history from Binghamton University.
The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries."
Since its inception more than 60 years ago, the Fulbright Program has provided almost 300,000 participants _ chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential "" with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
