Otego under boil-water notice
OTEGO -- The village of Otego has issued a notice that residents boil water because crews are fixing a water main that broke because of cold weather, an official said at about 6:30 p.m. Monday.
The boil-water notice is in effect for 24 hours, said Arlu Whitaker, superintendent of streets and water for the village. Water service will be off for three to four hours, he said, and crews will work into the night to fix the broken pipe, estimated to be about 100 years old, at the intersection of Otsdawa Avenue and state Route 7.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the following advice is given for residents under a boil-water advisory:
* For personal use, create a supply of water for cooking, drinking, and tooth brushing by bringing water to a rolling boil for 1 minute. Timing starts when the water starts to bubble. Cool the water then place in clean containers for use or refrigerate.
* Hot (not boiled) soapy water can be used for dishwashing and kitchen/bathroom surface cleaning. As a precaution, add one tablespoon of bleach per gallon. Laundry water does not need to be treated. Unless specifically listed, water for showering does not need to be treated.
Four area TV stations to end analog service Tuesday
Many area residents will not be affected by the digital television transition, which begins Tuesday and continues through June, especially those who are customers of cable companies such as Time Warner Cable.
However, several area network affiliates will be ending analog broadcasts tomorrow, and residents may only then realize they are not equipped to receive digital-only signals.
The following stations are ending analog on Tuesday, Feb. 17:
■ WKTV-NBC in Utica
■ WNYS-MYTV in Syracuse
■ WSYT-Fox in Syracuse
■ WBNG-CBS in Binghamton.
