Crews at the scene of a Worcester fire were credited Tuesday with preventing extensive damage at the house on 155 Lake Road, said Worcester Fire Chief James Empie.
The cause is under investigation, but he said he did not believe it was suspicious.
The fire broke out on the exterior of the south side addition at the house owned by Donald Kennison and Ann Walton, Empie said. Kennison had returned home at about 10:45 a.m. and saw the fire, but with no cell-phone service and the home phone out, he had to go into town to report the blaze, Empie said.
The department receives automatic mutual aid on structure fires from East Worcester, Schenevus and Westford, he said. Crews were initially led by Worcester First Assistant Chief Dave Chase.
Quick work allowed the blaze to be contained to the exterior and some upstairs bedrooms, Empie said. The main structure had minimal damage, and he expected the family would be able to stay at the house Tuesday night.
The property was insured, Empie said.
