Business Beat: C'town store features handmade wares

Quirky Works Studio in Cooperstown is the creative outlet of Martha Heneghan and Karen Katz, two friends who said they found sewing with colorful vintage fabrics makes the area's ``dreary winters'' go by faster.

They make clothes, plus some home accessories and jewelry, with items collected in Otsego County. Most goods _ skirts, jackets and bags _ are created using thrift-store clothes and vintage fabrics refashioned into one-of-a-kind wearables.

The women started the businesses in the spring and since September have shown their clothing at The Sage Center at 22 Railroad Ave. in Cooperstown. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, call 547-7485.

Private showings and custom orders can be arranged by calling Heneghan at 437-2352 or Katz at 434-3418. The studio will have a booth at the Dec. 7 crafts fair in Hunt College Union at the State University College at Oneonta.

``We really love creating our quirky works, even though they are perfectly imperfect,'' the duo said in a media release ``Finding a bit of forgotten fabric, and matching it with a length of trim that was languishing in an old sewing box, and making something new, unique, and wearable is a huge thrill _ it only gets better when just the right person finds the piece and takes it home with them.''

Brisk business reported at Walgreens

Walgreens at 99 Chestnut St. in Oneonta has had healthy traffic since it opened Friday, said store manager Alexandra Hardin on Tuesday.

The Oneonta store's hours are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, except on Thanksgiving and Christmas, when hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pharmacy hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The Oneonta store has a drive-through for prescription pickups.

Some but not all Walgreens are open 24 hours a day, Hardin said, and there aren't plans for the Oneonta store to be open around the clock. Hardin said she would like the local store's pharmacy hours to expand if possible, depending on business.

The closest Walgreens stores are in the New Hartford and Utica areas and in Johnson City, Hardin said, and the only store in the region open 24 hours a day is in Elmira. The only Walgreens that sell alcoholic beverages are those in two regions in Florida, she said.

The Oneonta store has 16 employees, including Hardin, and is fully staffed. Alan Sessions, a business service representative, and the staff at the CDO Workforce Career Center were helpful in making the hiring process easy and finding employees who are ``good workers,'' she said.

``We're very glad to be in the community,'' Hardin said.

Paint firm promotes health

Golden Artist Colors of New Berlin has implemented a tobacco-free campus policy for all employees and visitors, according to a company media release.

The tobacco-free initiative, launched Thursday in conjunction with the American Cancer Society's 33rd Annual Great American Smokeout, is among efforts in a wellness program at the 147-employee company.

For more than a year, employees at the paint company have participated in walking programs, weight-loss programs resulting in a loss of 500 pounds among participants, increased physical activity and smoking-cessation classes.

"We cannot convince others of the need to eliminate smoking without becoming a model ourselves,'' Mark Golden, chief executive officer of the firm, said in a prepared statement. ``It's the right thing to do _ for everyone."

Magazine recognizes fund

The FAM Value Fund (FAMVX) is on the "Money 70" list in Money magazine's December issue as a top, high-quality mutual fund, according to the Cobleskill-based company.

Criteria for making the list include a consistent strategy, experienced managers and admirable long-term performance, a FAM media release said.
