Business Beat: Family reaches goal of Stamford coffee shop

The Kaaterskill House has opened to fill a niche in Stamford, co-owner Aree Bray said.

The eatery serves more than 20 varieties, blends and flavors of coffee _ hot or cold _ and bagels and pastries. Bray said he and his wife, Sally, acquired the building about five years ago and started thinking about opening a coffee shop.

The business opened in late October and plans call for opening a commercial kitchen in the building so that baked goods and soups can be made on the premises, perhaps in January, Bray said recently. The shop has a coffee bar, and the expansion will include dining room seating, he said.

Coffee shop co-owners are his brother and sister-in-law, John and Carine Bray, and John's daughter, Tierney Bray.

Aree Bray, whose other pursuits include work as lighting director at The West Kortright Centre in East Meredith and the Roxbury Arts Group, said opening a coffee shop seemed like it would be fun. The goal was reached with a lot of help, including from his parents, former Stamford Mayor Waylen and Cherlyn Bray, he said.

Renovations have included restoration of the two-story building, which was built about 1900 and was an unoccupied residence for about 30 years, Aree said.

The coffee shop is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call Aree Bray at 434-7273.

Price Chopper partners with media group

Price Chopper Supermarkets will be partners with EatingWell Media Group, an international publication and e-network headquartered in Burlington, Vt., to deliver recipes that meet stringent guidelines for taste and nutrition, according to a media release from the grocery store chain.

``Price Chopper is poised to share a dynamic cornucopia of recipes and food information by offering the fruits of EatingWell's labor," said Mona Golub, Price Chopper's vice president of public relations and consumer services, in a prepared statement.

The partnership started about a year ago. It is offered under the store's Healthy U program, which provides a forum for shoppers to share comments in stores, online at www.pricechopper.com and by phone at (800) 767-7667.

Based in Schenectady, the Golub Corp. owns and operates more than 100 Price Chopper grocery stores.

At Home Care ranks among top

At Home Care Inc. in Oneonta has been named to the 2008 HomeCare Elite, a list of the most successful Medicare-certified home health-care providers in the nation, a media release from the company said.

The annual review identifies the top 25 percent of agencies, ranked by an analysis of performance measures in quality outcomes, quality improvement and financial performance. Data for this analysis was compiled from publicly available information.

The 2008 HomeCare Elite is sponsored by OCS Inc., a provider of health care informatics, and DecisionHealth, publisher of the independent newsletter.

``To receive an acknowledgement of this kind is truly rewarding, but more important, gives recognition and credit to the day-in and day-out commitment of the staff, management and leadership," said Nicholas J. Nicoletta, chairman of At Home Care's board of directors, in a prepared statement.

At Home Care Inc., a partnership of A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta and Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, is a Medicare-certified home-health agency with central offices in Oneonta. AHC provides services in Herkimer, Delaware and Otsego counties and is expanding into Chenango County.

Also, at the annual meeting of the National Association for Home Care in October, At Home Care Inc. was recognized in a media release by Philips Home Healthcare Solutions and Strategic Healthcare Programs for reductions in hospitalization rates among patients monitored from their homes.
