ONEONTA _ One of the original members of the Oneonta High School Alumni Association was honored as its "Alumna of the Year" at a ceremony at the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Friday.
A crowd estimated by organizers at more than 500 was at the ceremony to honor past President Madolyn Palmer, who graduated in 1953. There were about 450 at the former Armory when the event was held there last year.
"I was surprised to be chosen," Palmer she said before the event. "I like to organize things but I'm not used to the recognition."
She joined with Geoff Smith, Anthony "Tony" Drago, Frank Gallucci and William "Bud" Pirone in starting the organization in 1999 that has more than 2,000 members today.
Association President Kathryn Dailey Sason said Palmer was being honored for all her "behind-the-scenes" work for the organization. Gallucci and Pirone have also received the award during the four years it has been given.
In presenting the honor, Pirone, who retired as high school principal in 1997, said that when he considered who he wanted to work with to form the group, Palmer was on the list.
She was an administrative assistant for business in the district for 30 years, and he knew she was someone to be counted on.
Sen. James Seward, in congratulating Palmer, said, "We honor you and thank you for being such an important part (of the Association)."
Palmer, who retired this year after two terms as president of the association, said the growth of scholarships it provides to graduating seniors is an important part of the group's work.
But she is "most proud" of the Wall of Distinction and Athletic Hall of Fame, which will be inducting their second slate at the high school at 9 a.m. Saturday.
It has provided her an opportunity to learn so much about the achievements of those who have graduated, she said.
The honor will not prevent her from continuing to be part of the association, she said. "I plan on working just as hard."
