Business Beat: Bulls Head Inn scheduled to reopen in Cobleskill

Plans are to reopen the Bulls Head Inn in Cobleskill this month, said Bill Thetford, who will resume work as a chef at the restaurant.

Tony and Sabine Giammattei will be the owners of the restaurant at 105 Park Place, Thetford said. Tony, trained in Bavarian hotels and restaurants, was owner and operator of Schlossgarten Cafe Graf Lodron, a seasonal beer garden and outdoor restaurant in Bavaria, according to a media release. The couple will greet Bulls Head Inn customers.

Thetford said he will return to the kitchen, where he was chef for six years. Janet Burke, who was chef and owner of Janet's Cafe in Schoharie, will assist Thetford, the release said. The restaurant will serve beef, veal, pork, poultry and more.

Thetford said the tentative opening date is Sept. 17, after renovations and redecorating.

The Bulls Head Inn will be open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and for dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday and from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, the release said. The telephone number is (518) 823-4446.

Pharmacy opening pending

Brick walls stand at the intersection of Chestnut and West streets in Oneonta, and bright red Walgreens signs have been mounted.

Construction continues at the store, but no opening date has been set. Julie Davis, spokeswoman in company's Deerfield, Ill., headquarters, said recently that the opening is projected to be during the last week in November.

In fiscal year 2007, Walgreens opened 621 stores, including 120 acquisitions, for an increase of 536 stores after relocations and closings. The company will open 550 stores in fiscal year 2008, according to the corporation's website, and it aims to have more than 7,000 stores in 2010, with growth areas concentrated in California and the Northeast. As of July 31, of 6,356 drugstores nationally, 149 were in New York state. The Oneonta store will be the first in the four-county area, according to the chain's online store locator.

Factors in choosing sites include size of intersections, traffic patterns, demographics and locations near hospitals. Walgreens Co. has 226,000 employees and is a publicly traded corporation on the New York State Exchange under the symbol WAG.

June-July home sales mixed locally

State sales of single-family homes in July outpaced June sales by almost 7 percent, according to the New York State Association of Realtors.

The increase was attributed to the selection of homes, moderating prices and low mortgage interest rates, the association said in a media release.

Locally by county, sales increased from 29 to 33, or 13.8 percent, in Otsego and from 10 to 19, or 90 percent, in Delaware; but sales were down from 31 to 29, or 6.5 percent, in Chenango; and from 19 to 18, or 5.3 percent, in Schoharie, the preliminary results showed.
