UCCCA announces stipends for artists


ONEONTA _ The New York Foundation for the Arts and the Upper Catskill Community Council of the Arts recently announced the round three recipients of the strategic opportunities stipends for artists seeking funding for opportunities that will benefit their work or career development.

These competitive awards have assisted artists by off-setting expenses incurred from travel and lodging, as well as material for exhibitions, residencies and workshops.

The stipends are offered three times annually and cannot exceed $600, organizers said.

SOS supports artists in all disciplines including crafts, dance, folk arts, design, literature, media, music, performance art, theatre, visual and interdisciplinary arts,"said Cynthia Marsh, coordinator of programming at the Arts Council.

According to Marsh, the Arts Council coordinates the program in Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego and Otsego counties.

The round three recipients of the stipends are as follows:

Barbara Mellon Kolb, Fleishmanns; Laurie M. Brooks, South New Berlin; Alina Bliumis, Andes; Jennifer Pepper, Cazenovia; Linda J. Esterley, Baldwinsville; Kim Waale, Manlius; Breath Hand, Cherry Valley; Daniel Buckingham, Clayville; Zena Gurbo, Gilbertsville; and Bill Quinn, Treadwell.

Artists interested in applying for round one strategic opportunity stipends for 2008-09 may download an application at www.uccca.com or www.nyfa.org, or call Marsh at 432-2070 for a hard copy.

Artists with opportunities from November to February should submit requests no later than Sept. 25. The Arts Council provides technical assistance in grant writing to those who are interested.
