Storm hits, but no injuries cited

Staff Report

Lightning hit a house or nearby it during a storm Monday but resulted in no fire or injuries, an Oneonta city fire department captain said.

Crews responded to the home of David and Heather Heyduk at 186 County Route 47 shortly after 7 p.m., Capt. Patrick Pidgeon said.

The lightning either hit the house or a utility pole, on which a telephone box was blown apart, Pidgeon said, and inside the house's kitchen, a couple of lights were blown out. The telephone worked, and a resident called 911 with a report of a smell of smoke, he said.

Crews checked the house with a thermal imaging device but found no fires, he said.

The storm also resulted in an outage in the city that lasted about a minute and triggered alarms at Nader Towers, at 2 Mitchell St., and Academy Arms, at 33 Academy St., he said.

Otsego, Delaware and Chenango deputies had no reports of weather-related problems Monday night.
