Bathroom floor collapses at camp
DOWNSVILLE _ A floor of a bathroom building at a Delaware County campground gave way Saturday morning, causing three people to fall eight feet into a basement, according to Downsville fire officials.
"It just pancaked right down," Downsville Fire Chief Mark Mattson said Sunday night.
The fire department was dispatched to Catskill Mountain Kampground to help rescue the fallen campers, but they had gotten themselves out by the time firefighters arrived, Mattson said.
The bathroom building was used by both men and women, Mattson said.
The collapse at about 10:30 a.m. resulted from a wooden floor that had rotted, he said.
The only injury was to a man who had a possible dislocated shoulder, Mattson said.
The campground has 90 tent and RV sites along the East Branch of the Delaware River, according to the Colchester Chamber of Commerce's website.
No one answered the phone at the campground late Sunday night.
Firefighters control fire damage
SCHENEVUS _ Firefighters on Sunday limited fire damage in a Schenevus home to one bedroom, fire officials said.
The blaze at Dorothy Sutton's home on county Route 56 was reported at about 2:20 p.m. after the occupants noticed power loss to a computer, said Schenevus Fire Chief Pete Comino.
While investigating the power outage, the residents found a fire in an upstairs bedroom, he said.
The cause is under investigation, but is believed to be electrical in nature, Comino said.
Between 35 and 40 firefighters from several area fire departments, including Schenevus, Worcester, Westford and East Worcester, managed to knock the fire down quickly with an interior attack, Comino said.
"It was a nice save by the fire departments," he said.
In addition to the room in which the fire started, the two-story home suffered smoke and water damage and Sutton, her son and her granddaughter are being assisted by the Red Cross.
