Oneonta man, 23, pleads innocent to rape charges

COOPERSTOWN _ An Oneonta man accused of raping a 23-year-old female student at the State University College at Oneonta has pleaded innocent to charges of first-degree rape, second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault.

Justin Gillingham, 23, of Oneonta, was indicted on these charges June 17 before state Supreme Court Justice Michael Coccoma.

He pleaded innocent in court the next day and is being held at the Otsego County jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

According to court records, the incident allegedly occurred May 16 in the city of Oneonta when he ``did with intent to cause death, attempt to break (the victim's) neck,'' as well as rape the woman.

Oneonta police have said the attack occurred on a wooded path to the college campus, and the woman was repeatedly punched in the face. They also have said that Gillingham has denied attacking the woman.

Gillingham is represented by Edmeston attorney William ``Jack'' Gibbons.

Also indicted June 17 were:

ä Gerald W. Jenkins Jr., on charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree burglary and second-degree assault.

Jenkins, who is represented by Cooperstown attorney Garo Gozigian, pleaded innocent at arraignment June 18.

According to court records, the incident allegedly occurred May 4 in the town of Maryland when he stabbed someone with a knife.

Jenkins is being held at the Otsego County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
