Avoid open burns, officials say

DELHI _ Dry conditions during the last two weeks have increased the possibility of grass and brush fires, Richard Bell, Delaware County Department of Emergency Services director, said Wednesday.

Bell said all county residents should avoid open burns, including burning in burn barrels and outdoor fireplaces while the dry conditions exist.

Meanwhile, the state Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Forest Protection has advised Chenango County residents to refrain from open burning.

The advisory, issued Thursday, applies to eight other counties in DEC Region 7. The media release cited "higher-than-normal temperatures and low relative humidity over the past several days" as contributing to a fire level of "very high."

The conditions are expected to remain until "appreciable rainfall" occurs, the release said, and such conditions could recur through mid-May.
