Delhi cocaine case sent to grand jury

Staff Report

The cases against two SUNY Delhi students involving nearly two pounds of cocaine seized on campus Monday will be heard by a grand jury, Delaware County District Attorney Richard Northrup said Friday.

The State University College of Technology at Delhi students were suspended pending a college hearing.

Jonathan C. Molina, 19, of the Bronx, who was charged with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, was returned to jail without bail after a felony hearing Friday before Delhi Town Justice Joseph Skovira, Northrup said. The class A-1 felony charge carries a maximum penalty of 25 years to life.

Daniel R. Thorington, 21, of Scotia, who was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, was released Wednesday on reduced bail of $50,000, awaiting grand-jury action, Northrup said. The class B felony, with no prior record, carries a maximum 81/3-to-25-year sentence.

The two, each second-year students at SUNY Delhi, were originally jailed on $100,000 bail after the Delaware County Drug Enforcement Unit, composed of Delaware deputies, Delhi police, University Police and Community Narcotics Team members of the state police, executed a search warrant and found the drugs in their dorm room. The search came after a six-week investigation, deputies said.

It was determined after the arrest that Molina should not have been eligible for bail, Northrup said.
