Fire damages Walton house

Staff Report

A fire damaged part of a two-family house in the village of Walton on Monday.

A fast interior attack at 16 Liberty St. helped quench the flames before the 1:40 p.m. fire spread throughout the entire building, Walton Fire Chief Jim Jacob said Monday night.

"The guys just made a wonderful stop," Jacob said.

A family occupied one side of the house, which is owned by someone from downstate, while a man occupied the other half, Jacob said. No injuries were reported.

The fire is believed to have originated in an upstairs laundry room, but the cause is under investigation, Jacob said.

Tommy and Dana Brannock lived with their two young children on the side of the building where the fire started, Jacob said.

He said he did not know the name of the other man or if he lived there with anyone else.

The blaze was confined to one or two rooms and the attic, he said.

The occupants are believed to be staying with friends or family, and the Red Cross has been notified, Jacob said.

"They are out for at least a couple of days," he said.

The fire was knocked down in 30 to 40 minutes, officials said, and Trout Creek and Delhi firefighters assisted the Walton Fire Department at the scene.
