Editor: Magazine "not going to die"

By Jake Palmateer

A regional magazine catering to a gay, lesbian and/or bisexual readership is late in publishing its next print edition because of financial constraints.

Diversity Rules Editor James Koury said he is committed to continuing with the magazine, which was first published in the spring of 2006.

"It's not going to die," Koury said Thursday.

Koury said the economic downturn resulted in a loss of advertising dollars at the beginning of the year that followed a period of good revenue and growth for the magazine.

Revenue is starting to pick up, but it is going toward debt for issues from earlier in the year, Koury said.

Koury said he is aiming to have the print edition of the September/October issue distributed by the end of the month.

In a letter to subscribers and advertisers, Koury outlined the situation faced by the magazine and highlighted the developments he said are designed to ensure the magazine's survival.

These include having the magazine available by subscription at Zinio.com; holding fundraisers; and soliciting suggestions and financial help from his readers.

"Just know this: Diversity Rules will survive!" Koury states in the letter. "This is simply a minor bump in the road and a transition period toward bigger and better things."

Koury said a "huge surprise feature" is planned for the November/December issue, and the only hint he would give The Daily Star about who would be on the cover was that the person was a "he" and is nationally known.

The September/October issue is available at Zinio.com. The Diversity Rules website, which has some of the content in the print edition and additional information, is www.diversity-rules.com.
