This coming Monday is Food Day in the United States. The grassroots campaign is targeting six areas for consumer awareness, and those are:
"¢ promoting healthy foods to reduce diet-related disease
"¢ supporting sustainable farms and limiting subsidies to big agribusiness concerns
"¢ reforming factory farms to protect the environment
"¢ diminishing hunger by having greater access to food
"¢ curtailing junk food promotion to children
"¢ increasing support for fair working conditions for farm and food workers
If you and your family want to eat a more healthy diet, and even lose weight, there is no time like now to start.
The library has many cookbooks and magazines to help you get started. Try some of these:
"Healthy Family Meals" is geared toward every family member and provides nutritional, healthy meals.
Many of the recipes can be made in 30 minutes or fewer. More than 150 recipes from the American Heart Association cover appetizers, main dish, vegetables, desserts and even a section on cooking with kids.
Soup season is here with the cooler temperatures and "Saved by Soup" has more than 100 low-fat recipes to try. Judith Barrett used soup to lose weight and her collection of recipes contains for vegetable- and meat-based soups.
By cutting the fat, you can enjoy these warm, filling soups, and still get satisfyingly full.
"How to Feed Your Whole Family a Healthy Balanced Diet" by Gill Holcombe is geared toward families short of time and money.
The author shows you how to use healthy ingredients to make nutritious meals for a family of four on less than $45 per week. The book contains more than 200 recipes, plus shopping lists, meal plans, recipes and more.
Jennifer Iserloh's "Secrets of a Skinny Chef" has 100 guilt-free recipes. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert, all will allow you o eat without feeling stuffed.
The author battled her own weight issues and was able to still eat all the foods she loved. She shares tips and advice on how she did this, so you can, too.
Pam Anderson is known for her fail-proof recipes, but in creating them, she gained a few pounds every year.
Determined to lose weight and still eat foods she loved, she set about creating a cookbook that would allow her to do just that.
"The Perfect Recipe for Losing Weight and Eating Great" will never make you feel as if you are on a diet, and that's the point.
Lose weight and feel great with this book.
"Slim and Scrumptious" by Joy Bauer contains recipes for more than 75 healthy meals your family will love.
The author is a nutritionist and the cookbook features breakfast recipes, soups and salads, entrees for pasta, poultry, beef, pork and fish. Vegetable dishes and desserts are also included.
The wide variety helps you create something different every night.
Learn how to cook with whole foods in Cynthia Lair's "Feeding the Whole Family."
The recipes are quick and easy to prepare and are especially geared for families with babies and young children. If you are new to whole grains and the like, you can start small using this book.
"The Best Life Diet Cookbook" by Bob Greene shows how you can lose weight and still eat delicious food.
Comfort food recipes have been reworked to make them healthful and your family can enjoy them without the guilt. Meal plans are also included.
