Polar Bear ice cream still at Pie in the Sky

As the owners of Pie in the Sky, we try to go about our business in a sincere and responsible manner, feeling that actions speak louder than words. However, following Tom Grace's Feb. 5th article in The Daily Star regarding Polar Bear ice cream, we felt we had to respond.

In that article, Mr. Gillette is quoted as saying that he "grew up eating Polar Bear ice cream and loved it." We'd like to add that in recent years many of his servings of Polar Bear ice cream were enjoyed right here at our store.

What we wonder is how and why, knowing full-well that a Polar Bear Homemade Ice Cream shop still exists in our area, Mr. Gillette could proceed legally, ethically, in good conscience, to promote a new, unrelated business using the same name. Please understand that our contention is in no way with the opening of a new ice cream business in town, it is merely in its naming, and the frustration and confusion that ensues.

To our befuddled customers, we do not know what legal chicanery Mr. Gillette conjured up to "acquire the Polar Bear trademark," but we assure you that when we re-open in mid-April, we'll be serving the same Polar Bear Homemade Ice Cream that has been churned out by the same vintage machines that have for decades satisfied ice cream lovers with the same, wonderfully smooth, delicious treat we all know and love.

Star did not help Soccer Hall succeed

Although I knew it was coming, I was saddened to read that the Soccer Hall was officially ending its operations in Oneonta.

I had the pleasure of working part time for the Soccer Hall of Fame for several years and left impressed by the small but dedicated staff. I attended many induction ceremonies and was always moved to the point of tears by the ceremony. I do not know how the Hall died, but I know that if you look you will see the knife wounds of The Daily Star in her back.

I worked at the Hall under three different Soccer Hall presidents. One thing that remained consistent was the ill will displayed by The Daily Star toward the Soccer Hall.

In an editorial appearing in The Daily Star on Feb. 4, 2010, titled "Oneonta needs to define itself," the parting comment was, "To heck with the Soccer Hall and the former O-Tigers. Good riddance. We can be anything we want, and now is the time to decide just what that should be."

It is my prayer that some day the town of Oneonta will find a vision for itself that will enrich the city and its surrounding communities. It is my prayer that the buildings and playing fields of the Soccer Hall lend themselves to new activities, but that it never be forgotten that it was the Soccer Hall and that something of importance took place here.
