Turn building into more than mosque

The Mosque and Solomon's Quandary: My cousin Danny (we were born one week apart) died as the World Trade Center collapsed around him on 9/11. His wife and young children, in many ways, perished with him. My brother barely survived that day, stopping as he ran to put out a woman on fire with his suit coat.

Now the proposed building of a mosque has ignited those citing constitutional rights, and those who believe such a structure defiles hallowed ground. I suggest that the building be both a mosque and a non-denominational center for 9/11 family and victims. Perhaps the design and construction could be along the lines of what Habitat for Humanity builds.

Maybe former presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush and Jimmy Carter, and Muslim leaders could help with coordinating the project. And maybe the entire structure could be named Peace, Love and Understanding.

All deserve credit in successful search

Regarding the search and rescue operation in Laurens Aug. 21-23, congratulations are in order.

It takes many people to coordinate a large-scale search effort like this one and it was handled with utmost professionalism.

This team effort included the Laurens Fire Department, state Department of Environmental Conservation, state troopers, county EMS coordinators, the Oneonta Airport, and more than 100 volunteers.

My crew and I found Dolly in the search area where we were assigned.

We have received quite a bit of publicity about it and of course are very proud, although we want to make sure that due credit is given to all.

We commend the Laurens Fire Department and everyone involved.

Great job everyone.
