Vote for right moratorium

The results of the recent election showed how strongly residents want to prevent hydrofracking in this area. At the time of the election, we were pleasantly surprised to hear Janet Hurley Quackenbush state that she was anti-fracking.

"As an elected official, it is my responsibility to hear all the information as presented and act on behalf of what my constituency is saying. I have heard it and I am opposed to natural gas drilling. I supported town legislation passed in 2004 to restrict heavy industrial uses in the town, and would support strengthening that law in light of residents' clear opposition to natural gas drilling. I am in favor of new legislation to strengthen and protect our town against natural gas drilling."

A special meeting was called Dec. 30 by Janet Hurley Quackenbush, which appeared calculated to escape public notice on a holiday week.

At this meeting, board members adopted an alternate, weaker draft moratorium on their last few days in office. They fired the anti-fracking lawyer, who was helping the town for free, instead using a lawyer sympathetic to those who support fracking.

Mrs. Hurley Quackenbush was elected because of her publicized anti-fracking stance and has an ethical responsibility to act in accordance with the stated wishes of the majority of taxpaying, voting property owners.

A town hall meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 13, at which time two moratoriums will be presented. The "M" version, which is clearly inadequate, and the "W" version, which is the moratorium crafted to strengthen the town mining code.

I urge all residents to attend this meeting to hold our elected officials accountable and to make sure the "W" moratorium is passed to prevent hydrofracking in our town.

Speech, editorial were lacking

I read your opinion piece in Thursday's edition of The Daily Star in awe that anyone could write such drivel. Maybe you should send a copy to the White House.

With all the problems this country faces we got nothing but wishes and dreams, campaigning and class warfare.

It was long on entertainment and short on substance.

Nice job, Mr. President. Almost as bad as your opinion piece.

Just my opinion.
