'Anti-Everything' in town is entertaining

It has been entertaining to watch the local "Anti-Everything" movement's level of frustration and absurdity grow over the last month or so. To cite a few examples: At a recent economic development conference with the county board in Oneonta, Rep. Kosmer stated "the threat of natural gas is impeding our economic progress." This ludicrous comment would be humorous were it not for the fact that he is on the county board and SWEC/NGAC committees. Moderator Kuzminski, in a recent LTE, tells us that fossil fuels (e.g. natural gas) "make possible a population in excess of the carrying capacity of the plant." I wonder how many of us have to go? Executive Director Pope, reacting to President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech, said: "He risked losing the enthusiastic support of many environmentalists by 'cheerleading' for greater shale drilling." She also called him "uninformed" and is "concerned he is going to sell out the environment for re-election." She then tells us (you and me) that we are "profligate" with our use of energy. The dictionary definition of profligate is "immoral, extremely wasteful, recklessly extravagant and abandoned to vice." Shame on us! Ms. Winchester of Butternuts found Mr. Obama's comments "as disappointing as they were uninformed and unenlightened." She further wonders "what bubble the president is living in!" Perhaps she should go down to D.C. and pop it. Finally "Middlefield Neighbors" spokeswoman Jastremski said she "will try to encourage first lady Michelle Obama to come out against hydrofracking for natural gas." She is encouraged that she may be successful because the first lady has "an organic garden planted on White House grounds." Incredible.

I hope we can all sleep better tonight, knowing we have such enlightened, insightful and humble individuals protecting us from the scourge of natural gas development in our country.
