Red Cross closes last Delaware County shelter

Collections for flood victims continue

Aid efforts for flood victims continue throughout the region as individuals and organizations tend to the needs of the thousands affected by last weekend’s storms and flooding.

The American Red Cross closed its last emergency shelter in Delaware County on Friday, but the agency continues to serve the region by way of a mobile feeding truck. Heated meals and boxed sandwiches are being delivered to Hancock, Stamford, Windsor, Deposit and the Prattsville/Margaretville areas. Donations can be made online at www.redcross.org, or by calling (800) RED-CROSS or texting ‘REDCROSS’ to 90999 (to make a $10 donation).

The Delaware County Human Services Department has arranged for free public transportation to and from the Disaster Assistance Service Center at Belleayre Ski Center in Highmount, which is serving a three-county area. Shuttle service is also available for area grocery stores.

Shuttle service is available starting at 8 a.m. daily through Friday as follows:

Donations of food, clothing, personal care items and other materials are being collected throughout the region. One site has received so many donations that it is now handing them back out to those in need. Area residents can pick up ice, dry ice, water, food, cleaning supplies, clothing, shoes and personal care items at the Grand Gorge Fire Department at 60753 State Route 30.
