{"Body Text Edit"/}Four businesses recently opened their doors in Cooperstown: Savor New York, Frugal Fashionista, Blue Sky and The Silver Fox. Despite the doom-and-gloom atmosphere in our recessionary times, these business owners decided to pursue a path that we hope will benefit themselves and the area economy.
As shop owner Brenda Berstler of Savor New York put it, "It's like having children. If you wait for the perfect time, you might never have them.''
We applaud this entrepreneurial spirit. If this recession is to be turned around, it will take people such as Berstler, Renee LaFond of Blue Sky, Kathryn and Richard Busse of The Silver Fox, and Jillian Bos of Frugal Fashionista.
We also are pleased to see the further diversification of shops along the birthplace of baseball's Main Street. We feel this diversification is needed for economic reasons and the added shopping experience of residents.
We wish the business owners the best of luck.
{"Headline24"/}Good to see Hall, school resolve conflict
{"Body Text Edit"/}For a while, it appeared the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Father's Day Legends game and Cooperstown Central School's high school graduation, set for June 21, would be in conflict.
The clashing of schedules was unfortunate for many parents and students at Cooperstown because students were committed to volunteering at the Hall's Classic to raise money for their senior trip; however, many were also committed to serving as ushers at graduation, or were planning on attending to see family and friends graduate.
Parents also were set to volunteer for the game.
Thankfully, the two parties were able to resolve the problem. According to Cooperstown High School Interim Principal Amy Kukenberger, both sides were able to plan the events so that everything can run smoothly. That includes the village providing a trolley for graduating seniors to participate in the Classic parade and then attend graduation.
While the conflict is regrettable and could have been avoided with better communication, we are impressed by the flexibility and cooperation displayed by the Hall of Fame and Cooperstown Central.
We applaud the dedication toward making each event work.
However, we do hope that in the future, the Hall and the school will better communicate with each other before setting plans for such large events.
