... To Dora Fowler and Madolyn Palmer, two local women who were recently honored for their years of service.
Fowler was recognized by the state Legislature for being the oldest serving teacher in the state; the Roxbury Central School teacher has previously received the Wal-Mart "Teacher of the Year" award, as well as other accolades for her career that stretches back to 1950.
Fowler, 89, teaches social studies to fifth- and sixth-grade students and calls her profession the greatest in the world. Two years ago, when school officials honored Fowler, many colleagues, former students and community members shared their memories of this woman known as fashionable, adventurous, fun-loving and inspiring.
Palmer, 74, was named the Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Hartwick College Citizens Board. The retired Oneonta City School District administrative assistant is involved with a list of volunteer organizations too numerous to detail. Palmer founded the Oneonta High School Alumni Association 10 years ago and continues to be active in its endeavours, as well as giving her time to a variety of other causes.
The two women are inspiring examples of how much impact a person can have on the lives of others, whether as a volunteer or in a professional role.
