ATVs, and in particular snowmobiles, are part of daily life for many whether for recreation or an occupation. Safe Kids of Otsego Country recommends that children under the age of 16 should never ride on, or operate, ATVs of any kind or any size _ including youth-sized ATVs.

Art contest to focus on gambling addiction
LEAF Inc. is sponsoring a fine arts contest to help bring awareness to the growing phenomenon of problem gambling in Otsego County. LEAF is seeking artists to create striking images that can be used in a campaign to educate the public and prevent problems with gambling addiction in the local community. LEAF is being supported in its efforts with funding from the state Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.

Hockey to be seen at Ice Harvest Festival
On Saturday, Feb. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Hanford Mills Museum will host its Ice Harvest Festival. The festival will feature historic ice cutting, horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice hockey demos and tips from the State University College at Oneonta hockey club, ice sculpting, outdoor fire pits, as well as children's games and activities.

Farmers discuss energy-saving ideas at Hobart Rotary event
Thanks to the Hobart Rotary Club, local farmers have a few more ideas about how to save energy on the farm. The club held its eighth annual Farmer Appreciation Day meeting at the Hobart Community Center on Jan. 15, with a presentation by Dick Riseling of Apple Pond Farm.
