Area Girl Scouts in the NYPENN Pathways will be recognized at three ceremonies this month for earning the Girl Scout Gold, Silver and Bronze awards.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. To earn the award, girls must demonstrate their leadership abilities, by completing Journey activities, which is the essence of the Girl Scout leadership experience, and then spend at least 80 hours working on a Gold Award Take Action project that is meant to have sustainability within the community. Thirty-four girls throughout the 26-county jurisdiction of Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways earned the Gold Award this year.
Katharina Hess of Deposit made 911 house numbers for every house outside of the village and in the fire district so emergency vehicles could find residents easier.
Amber Milton of Downsville got her hometown and neighboring town together to support the troops that deployed to Afghanistan for a year. They lined the streets and held a parade the day before the departure of the soldiers.
Katrina Pallik of Downsville designed a system for the Colchester Historical Society to sort and catalogue items to allow the historical society and community members to better be able to find objects in the collection.
The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award Girl Scouts in sixth through eighth grades can earn.
The requirements to earn the Girl Scout Silver Award help girls gain leadership skills, by completing Journey activities, which is the essence of the Girl Scout leadership experience, and then spending at least 50 hours working on a project, either individually or with a small group, that provides a service to the community.
Area girls earning the Girl Scout Silver Award are: Candice Caruso of Walton, Salome Clarke of Sidney, Chelsea Doig of Downsville, Meredith Hammerlag of Walton, Brooke Hunter of Walton, Courtney Jennings of East Branch, Kimberly Kehr of Walton, Kathryn Lawrence of Downsville, Kristina Nunley of Walton, and Adrianna Thompson of Walton.
The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest award for Girl Scout juniors, in fourth and fifth grades. To earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award, girls must learn leadership and planning skills necessary to follow through on a project that makes a positive impact on her community. Girls can work within their troops to earn this award.
Locally, Girl Scout Junior Troop 30223 of Norwich recycled Capri Sun juice pouches. A company called TerraCycle gives money for the pouches that makes them into different items like lunch boxes. The girls took turns collecting the pouches and washing them out and donated the money they earned to the Gibson School.
