In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, Hobart Book Village will celebrate "Italian Week" in the bookshops along Main Street in Hobart from Saturday, Aug. 20, to Sunday, Aug. 28, with free events.
Saturday, Aug. 20, noon to 5 p.m.: Jewish Italian food will be served with a musical background by Sharon Cucinotta, Elizabeth Coleman and Don Dales. Presentation of "The Jews of Italy: An Historical Overview" at the Hobart International Bookport.
Sunday, Aug. 21, noon to 5 p.m: Reading from Giorgio Bassani's novel "The Garden of the Finzi Continis," followed by a showing of "The Garden of the Finzi Continis" at Adams' Bookstore.
Monday, Aug. 22, 5 to 7 p.m.: Movie Night: "Mediterraneo," a film by Gabriele Salvatores, at Adams' Bookstore.
Tuesday, Aug. 23, 5 p.m.: "The Music and Poetry of Fabrizio De Andre," at the Hobart International Bookport.
Wednesday, Aug. 24, 5 p.m.: Movie: "La meglio gioventu" Part I , a film by Marco Tullio Giordana, at Adams' Bookstore.
Thursday, Aug. 25, 5 p.m.: Movie: "La meglio gioventu," Part II, at Adams' Bookstore.
Friday, Aug. 26, 5 p.m.: Painter Pati Airey will talk about her grandmother's stories that inspired her paintings that are on display at the Hobart International Bookport.
Saturday, Aug. 27, noon to 5 p.m.: The food of Lombardy. Also a lecture by New York-based writer Michael Moore on "The Making of Italians: Alessandro Manzoni and the Betrothed," followed by a conversation on "Milano Then and Now," at the Hobart International Bookport.
Sunday, Aug. 28, noon to 3 p.m.: Food, wine and a musical finale with Heather Walts, soprano, and Don Dales, piano, at the Hobart International Bookport.
