Alpacas to be at C'town Harvest Festival

The Southern Tier Alpaca Association, a New York alpaca breeder group, will participate in the 32nd annual Harvest Festival at the Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18 and 19.

Participating STA farms will be on hand sharing their alpacas, their knowledge, products and more from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Dozens of alpaca will be on-site for visitors to meet, pet and feed as well as different types of products made from alpaca fiber for sale. There will also be demonstrations on basic husbandry and fiber use.

The Farmers' Museum's historic village and farm will offer entertainment, seasonal foods and crafts during this harvest celebration. STA farms will present spinning and fiber demonstrations, obstacle courses and alpaca products for sale, and answer any questions regarding the care and nature of these animals. Following with tradition, festival regulars Jim Kimball and Dick Bolt will perform traditional music of New York state, and Dickens the Clown will perform.

Visitors will be able to watch dog agility demonstrations and the Junior Livestock Show's Parade of Champions.

Visitors may participate in historic games and races, children's crafts, horse-drawn wagon and tractor rides, and farm activities and domestic demonstrations, such as flax processing, haystack building, rope making, medicine making and food preparation over the open hearth.

The Farmers' Museum is at 5775 State Highway 80 in Cooperstown. Admission is $12 for adults, $10.50 for seniors 65 and older, $6 for children ages 7 to 12, and free for children 6 and younger or New York State Historical Association members.
