---- — The Women's Club of Cooperstown will begin its 2010-11 year with its annual salad luncheon at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Christ Church Parish House on Fair Street in Cooperstown.
Those attending should bring a dish to pass and table service. Dessert, rolls and beverage will be provided. Club members may bring prospective members as guests. Following the salad luncheon, Kajsa Saatke will present a program titled "A New York State of Mind," and based on The Farmers' Museum quilt contest.
The Women's Club of Cooperstown will be under the leadership of President Pat Duncan, Vice President Martha Grossi, Corresponding Secretary Jan Jock, Recording Secretary Mary Margaret Kuhn and Treasurer Anita High.
Directors for the club this year will be Joyce Degelmann, Diane Eldridge, Mary Griffin and Susan Miosek.
Additional programs for the year will include in October, "Memento Mori" presented by C.R. Hones; in November, "Hunger: Especially in Our Own Community" presented by Audrey Murray; in December, "Christmas at the Fenimore" presented by Garret Livermore; in January "Empowering Your Inner Volunteer Spirit" presented by Nan Apps; in February "Yoga in a Chair" presented by Bonnie Fayssoux; in March "Wilderness Right of Passage for Youth: The Story of Hawk Circle" presented by Trista Haggerty and Ricardo Sera; in April, "It's Bridge! It's Scrabble! It's the Cooperstown Women's Club Game Day;" and in May, the annual spring luncheon and fashion show at the Otesaga Hotel.
During the year, there will continue to be an ongoing philanthropic project to support the work of the Cooperstown Food Bank.
Each month members are encouraged to bring to the meeting either a nonperishable food item or a monetary donation for the food bank.
The Helen N. Hale Scholarship, given each year by the Women's Club in memory of longtime Cooperstown Central School mathematics teacher and former president of Women's Club, Helen Hale, is awarded to graduating seniors at Cooperstown Central School who plan to continue their education. The 2010 winners were Deirdre Donley and Paul Kennedy.
The Mabel Atwell Drama Award was established by the Women's Club in memory of longtime Cooperstown Central School English teacher and former president of Women's Club, Mabel W. Atwell. Besides teaching English, Atwell was a longtime director of school dramatic productions. The award is given each year to a graduating senior or seniors for outstanding effort in the area of dramatic performance. The 2010 winners were Henry Bauer and Virginia Ofer.
In addition to their philanthropic work, the Women's Club of Cooperstown also sponsors the Garden Discussion Group, the Literary Discussion Group and the Meadowlarks, a group which makes holiday tray favors for residents of Otsego Manor.
