COMMENTING ON STORIES:

11. Advertising of any kind.
12. Typing in all caps.

Arboretum plans walks, sales, star parties

The George Landis Arboretum in Esperance is celebrating spring with several events this month.

An early morning bird walk will be held from 6 to 9 a.m. Saturday. Participants will explore the Arboretum grounds to find resident and migrating birds.

The instructor will be science educator George Steele.

The cost is $5 per person or $15 per family for members or $10 per person or $25 per person for nonmembers.

The arboretum's annual spring plant and book sale will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and 15.

Out-of-the-ordinary trees, shrubs and perennials are the hallmark of this event, according to a media release. The event includes a bake sale on both days.

Free soil pH tests will be provided on Saturday by the Cornell Cooperative Extension Schoharie Master Gardeners.

Those who wish to have their soil tested should bring one cup of dry soil in a clean plastic bag.

Admission and parking are free.

Volunteers are need the week before the sale, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, to help set up. Lunch will be provided.

Workers and bakers are needed for the plant sale weekend also.

Pick of the Pots, a free member-only preview and plant sale. will be offered from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 13. Details will appear in the newsletter, the Constant Contact e-mails, and at www.landisarboretum.org.

Alan French and the Albany Area Amateur Astronomers will lead public star parties at 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 27 and 28.

There will be free admission and parking, but donations will be accepted.

Star parties are canceled if the skies are mostly cloudy.

Steele will lead a spring night walk from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 28. Participants will explore the fields and forests of the Arboretum to find animals that are starting their yearly cycle of growth and reproduction. Participants should dress for the weather and the possibility of muddy trails.
