The public is invited to the next meeting of the Butternut Valley Grange in Gilbertsville on Monday when Anna Blinn Cole, architectural historian, will discuss various architectural styles represented in historic buildings throughout the community. The presentation will be at 7:30 p.m. before the group's business meeting.
During the business meeting, plans for the annual defensive driving course with instruction by AARP will be finalized. This course, open to the public, refreshes techniques for drivers and either reduces points on one's driver's license or can reduce the driver's annual insurance premium when successfully completing the full course. This year's course will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, May 8 and 9. Participants must attend both evenings for successful certification. Cost for the course is $17 for AARP members and $19 for nonmembers, o be paid on the first evening of the class. To reserve a seat for the course, call 783-2691. Class size is limited to 35 and is about half full, according to a media release.
Plans for the summer bus trip are also on the evening's agenda. There will be a discussion on legislative action pending in Albany that would require all new registered nurses to earn a bachelor's degree within 10 years to allow practice in New York state.
The Grange approved a resolution in opposition to legislation that would legalize poker tournaments for charitable gaming purposes for fundraising by churches and other civic organizations. Considerable discussion also centered on the United States' involvement in the United Nations without clear direction, the release stated.
Grange members will meet at the parking lot of Christ Church at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, for the spring roadside cleanup project.
The Otsego County Grange banquet will be held at the Masonic Temple in Laurens on Saturday, April 21, with the program starting at 4 p.m. Remnart Community Singers from the West Winfield area will perform and announcement of the 2012 Granger of the Year will be made. The baked ham, family-style dinner will be served at 5:15 p.m. Reservations for this event must be made with Anna Ritchey at 563-1104 by April 12.
The social hour at Monday's meeting will be coordinated by Marie Broadbent, Norm and Anna Ritchey, Jane Lawson, and Chuck, Charlotte and Sara Frank.
