Eight eighth graders did their homework this week so that they could take over St. Mary's School Friday.
They taught classes in math, English and art. They took care of business in the principal's office.
"When it's Catholic Schools Week, we take one day when the eighth graders take over," said Amber Roderick, who was acting as secretary. "We get to choose what we want to do."
"Turn to page 179," said Owen Kennedy, an eighth grader who chose to teach fractions to fourth graders.
The teacher-student switch at St. Mary's School, 38 Walnut St. in Oneonta was part of Catholic Schools Week, Feb. 2-6.
50 years ago
Feb. 7, 1962
Asa Allison, manager of the W.T. Grant store in Oneonta, was elected president of the Merchants Division of the Oneonta Chamber of Commerce at its annual meeting Tuesday.
Donald Gibbs of Murdock Hardware was elected first vice president. Charles Holdorf of B.F. Sisson Company, was elected a special vice president. This new office will replace the traditional second vice-president's position.
Clarence Preston was re-elected Chamber secretary. A plan to establish a special fund to be used for various promotions by the division was adopted at the meeting. A report on the $6,000 sign program was adopted last year was given by Holdorf and Preston.
According to the report, signs advertising Oneonta as a shopping center have been erected on thirteen sites.
Signs have been placed at Route 20 near Morrisville and Springfield; Route 7 near Richmondville and southwest of Sidney; Route 145 near Middleburgh; on Route 30 near East Branch and Route 23 near Prattsville.
They also have been placed on Route 8, north of New Berlin, Route 28 at Schuyler Lake and near Richfield Springs; Route 12 near Sherburne and Sangerfield and on Route 30 north of Schoharie.
