DELHI _ Hospitals in Walton and Stamford are no longer singled out for closure, following a state Health Department decision announced in New York City this week.

Thirty-two-bed Community Hospital in Stamford and 42-bed Delaware Valley Hospital Walton were targeted for closure last fall, part of a Health Department plan to cut 437 beds in a 17-county upstate region. The decision was not based on any discernible statistics, and Health Department officials said so.

The Health Department's decision went against a recommendation by the northeast region Health System Agency to spread the cuts among hospitals, instead of eliminating entire facilities.

The New York Titans, charter members of the 2-year-old American Football League, are "seriously considering" Oneonta as the site for their pre-season training camp next summer, Mayor Albert (Sam) Nader disclosed Tuesday night.

The mayor said that although negotiations are still in progress and many factors have yet to be worked out, "we have an excellent chance of meeting the Titans' requirements."

The unexpected announcement came little more than a week after it was learned that the Binghamton Triplets of the Class A Eastern League were considering playing one or more of their games here next season.

Mayor Nader, an ardent sports fan, conceived the ideas for both proposals, and has been the chief negotiator with both the Titans and Triplets.

While admitting he was not at liberty to discuss the terms of the negotiations, Nader said that the Webb Island area would probably be used as the training grounds rather than the open area in Neahwa Park.

Should the Titans accept the Oneonta bid, it would be the first time a professional football team has used this particular Upstate area as a training site.

It would also mark the return of professional sports to Oneonta, which has been devoid of an affiliation since the Canadian-American baseball league folded 10 years ago. Oneonta was a minor league affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
