Recycling, composting and discovering the properties of matter are some of the science presentations planned during the New York Power Authority's Earth Day celebration, which will take place at the Blenheim-Gilboa Visitors Center on Saturday and Sunday.
From 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, participants will learn about worm composting. The following day, also from 10 a.m. to noon, participants can attend " What's the Matter?" where they will investigate the properties of solids, liquids and gases through experiments with staff from the Scotia-Glenville Traveling Museum.
In addition to the weekend's scheduled programs, there will also be hands-on exhibits on recycling, energy efficiency and renewable energy. "Where Your Garbage Goes," a movie about recycling, will run continuously throughout the weekend in the visitors center theater. There will be free admission and popcorn.
Also at the visitors center, visitors can learn how NYPA's Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project, visible across the river, acts like a giant battery, generating hydroelectricity by recycling water between two huge reservoirs. Other displays demonstrate the basics of electricity, energy production and conservation.
In addition to the Earth Day events, the historic Lansing Manor Museum, part of NYPA's admission-free Blenheim-Gilboa Visitors Center complex, will reopen for the summer tourism season on Sunday.
This year marks Lansing Manor's 33rd year as an admission-free museum. Restored and operated by NYPA in cooperation with the Schoharie County Historical Society, Lansing Manor Museum is an early 19th-century country estate filled with authentic period furnishings and has been described as a history buff's "dream come true."
Several admission-free events are planned for the Lansing Manor this season, including the annual Quilt Show on June 4 and 5, and a Victorian Tea on May 21 and Aug. 7, among many others. Lansing Manor will be open daily, except Tuesdays, until Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Otego Yard Sale Day organizers are preparing a map of the location of the participating homes and groups.
