The first task of a reporter assigned to do a story on Lynn S. Bresee is to locate this busy gentleman somewhere in the vast reaches of the Oneonta Department Store.
He is apt to be anywhere from the neat and functional executive offices tucked away on the second floor to the candy counter where he might be selling a bit of candy to a youngster.
For his concept of merchandising has not changed a bit since he began his career with his father, Frank H. Bresee, 56 years ago.
The store’s 63rd anniversary is being observed this week.
“Oh, methods of buying and selling have changed over the years to be sure,” he says with a smile. “But people haven’t changed and the foremost aim of any salesman or saleslady should be to please the customer.”
Mr. Bresee recalls his early childhood when the family lived in Sidney. His mother, an avid musician, had a vast amount of sheet music.
“One day,” says Mr. Bresee, a smile crossing his face, “my mother looked out the window to see a line of people forming at the garage door.
“Her curiosity got the best of her and she came out to find that I was selling her sheet music.
“And I was doing pretty well,” stated the white-haired executive with a salesman’s pride.
“At any rate, business ended right then and there. And I spent the rest of that week going around getting back the sheet music I had sold.”
