---- — Landis Arboretum in Esperence has numerous events scheduled for August.
Two star parties by the Albany Area Amateur Astronomers will be offered. The First Quarter Lunar Party will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. The Albany Area Amateur Astronomers will host a star party featuring views of the moon.
On Thursday, Aug. 18, there will be a public star party and annual meeting for the Albany Amateur Astronomers Association.
At both programs, a variety of telescopes will be available. Alan French will hold an introductory program in the Meeting House followed by a short, outdoor tour of the prominent constellations. Donations will be accepted. The event will be canceled if skies are mostly cloudy. Call French at (518) 374-8460 for more details.
An edible wild plants walk will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. Participants will learn how to identify and prepare edible plants. Starting from the Meeting House, participants will walk around the arboretum to collect plants and come back to the Meeting House to prepare them for eating. The instructor will be science educator George Steele.
Steele will lead a program on pond ecology from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. Participants will learn about animal and plant life in the pond ecosystem.
Dragonflies and damselflies will be the topic of a talk and walk from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. Participants will walk around Arboretum ponds in different habitats to capture, identify and discuss the insects. The instructor will be Anne Donnelly, dragonfly surveyor for the state Natural Heritage Program.
The cost for each program will be $5 per person or $15 per family for members, or $15 per person and $25 per family for nonmembers.
