Garden events are set

Plots are available and events are planned for the Norwich Community Garden.

Garden plots are now available to area residents at the Community Garden on Hale Street Extension in Norwich.

New gardeners are being sought for both new and existing plots.

Norwich city residents are given priority, but anyone is eligible. Plots are free to use, but donations are accepted, organizers said.

The garden has a tool shed, compost bins and running water from May to October.

There will be a lasagna gardening workshop on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the garden. The workshop will be on the method of layering organic materials to build soil.

It is open to the public, but those who have plots in the garden can immediately apply this method in their own plots. The Norwich Garden is being expanded and five new community gardens will be developed in the county by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County thanks to funding provided by the State Department of Health's Healthy Heart program.

The goal of the Healthy Heart program is to reduce preventable causes of cardiovascular disease by creating and promoting opportunities for residents to be more physically active and eat more healthy foods, presenters said.

Community Garden Coordinator Stacie Edick is also looking for community partners to host educational sessions about gardening, composting, nutrition, food preservation and healthy lifestyles.

To sign up for a plot or register for the workshop, call Edick at 334-5841, ext. 21.
