COOPERSTOWN _ Jack C. Mitchell of Cooperstown is observing the 25th anniversary of his firm, Mitchell Moving and Storage, this month.
His 25 years in business here are a continuation of the business founded in 1890 by Mr. Mitchell's grandfather, the late Joseph Mitchell, who operated a hauling business until 1905 when it was taken over by Mr. Mitchell's father, the late George H. Mitchell, once an Otsego County sheriff.
He operated the business until 1934 when the current owner took over after graduation from Cooperstown High School. For several years his father assisted in many phases of the business, acting in an advisory capacity until his death in 1957.
In 1941, after seven years as an independent, the firm became associated with Allied Van Lines. Employees of Mr. Mitchell include Roy F. Roberts, Cooperstown, with Mr. Mitchell all the 25 years he has operated the business and an employee of the elder Mr. Mitchell before 1934; Robert B. Murdock, Carlton F. Rogers, and Francis Gallup, all of Cooperstown; George Walrath, Hartwick Seminary, and Herbert Wilfeard, Fly Creek, all drivers, and Douglas Walrath, Cooperstown, bookkeeper.
Mr. Mitchell married the former Sophie Mele of Hartwick. The couple have three children. Mr. Mitchell is a brother of Oneonta Supervisor Joseph Mitchell.
