Aug. 31, 1987

The State University College at Oneonta will use a $33,000 state Education Department grant to strengthen science and mathematics instruction in area elementary schools.

“Mathematics and Science Training for Rural Schools — Year Three,” is a cooperative project with the Catskill Regional Teacher Center and the Delaware-Chenango and Otsego-Northern Catskills boards of cooperative education. Elizabeth Jalbert, SUCO dean of professional studies, is director of the project and Marie E. Sejersen, associate professor in the SUCO mathematical sciences department is assistant director.

Regional workshops will focus on topics from life and physical sciences, problem solving, geometry, measurement, probability and statistics.

50 years ago

Aug. 31, 1962

FRANKLIN — Franklin was practically a “ghost town” Tuesday, when over 200 well-wishers and boosters of the Franklin Central School Band went to Syracuse to see the parades of Bands at the New York State Exposition. Franklin placed sixth but in the hearts of every Franklinite the Band deserved a much higher placement.

Seeing all the 47 bands march was a thrilling sight to any on-looker as these young people from all over the state, dressed in colorful costumes with shining instruments and hearty drums, marched to the beat and turned a difficult corner without missing a step.
