Arts programs receive funding

The Roxbury Arts Group recently announced that a film festival, theatrical productions, workshops for adults and kids and musical performances all over Delaware County will be part of its 2010 cultural offering thanks to awards totaling $21,800 received by 17 not-for-profit organizations and individual artists through the Community Arts Funding program, presenters said.

These funds are made available annually as part of the New York State Council on the Arts' Decentralization Program, administered in Delaware County by The Roxbury Arts Group.

Grants coordinator Ann Epner said local decision making is the key factor in the success and growth of the program.

A panel of seven Delaware County artists and community members review all the applications in what is a very competitive process, she said in a media release.

Decisions are based on the quality of the artistic proposal and the perceived benefit to the entire community.

"Typically, we receive requests for twice the amount available to re-grant. Over the years, as funding has steadily decreased, the panel struggles to adequately fund the best application," Epner said. "But since all the applications are worthy, it's a daunting task."

The awards will be presented to the winning applicants at a showcase and reception open to the public on Sunday, March 21 at 2 p.m. in the Hilt

Kelly Hall of the Roxbury Arts Center.
