"Oneonta and the Civil War," an exhibit commemorating the sesquicentennial of the beginning of the Civil War, opens Saturday at the Greater Oneonta Historical Society's History Center at 183 Main St.
Through text, images and artifacts, the exhibit includes the abolitionist movement, the Underground Railroad and U.S. Colored Troops in Oneonta and Otsego County; Otsego County Medal of Honor winners; Oneonta's military contributions; a visit by Oneonta civilians behind military lines; daily life on the homefront, and other related topics.
An exhibit reception Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. will feature live Civil War-era music by Kathy Shimberg and friends will play and sing Civil War era music. The event is free and open to the public, and there will be refreshments.
At 7 p.m. Oct. 17, Harry Bradshaw Matthews, associate dean and director of the US Pluralism Center at Hartwick College, will present "Flight to Freedom: Oneonta's Role in the Underground Railroad," including documentary evidence that Oneonta was a site for the Underground Railroad.
At 1 p.m. Nov. 12, singing group Redeeming Love will present a repertoire of anti-slavery songs from New England in the 1840s and 1850s, including some by the Hutchinson Family Singers.
The exhibit is scheduled to close Nov. 15. The History Center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays.

Farmers' Museum to host summer story time
A family story hour for children in pre-school through first grade will be offered Tuesdays at The Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown. Story Time takes place each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. beginning June 25. The program will run through Aug. 27.

Homeschool day set at museums
The Farmers' Museum, the Fenimore Art Museum, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum have teamed to offer a day of hands-on learning for homeschoolers and their families. Cooperstown Homeschool Day on June 26 is an opportunity to participate in special programming, explore the museums, learn, laugh and meet other homeschoolers.

The Historical Society of the Town of Middletown has announced the cast of the 2013 Living History Tour of Clovesville Cemetery to be held Saturday evening, June 29.

4-H fashion finalists announced at Revue
The annual 4-H Fashion Revue was held May 3 at the O'Neill High School Auditorium in Walton, with about 30 4-H members ages 5 to 18 from 13 clubs participating.

Annual Yard Sale Day set in Otego
The Otego Yard Sale Day organizers are preparing a map of the location of the participating homes and groups. Those interested in adding their location should call Bill Boerner at 988-7973 before Tuesday. Maps will be available, free of charge, at Jake's Deli, the Silversmith's and Harris Memorial Library starting Thursday.
