A Utica secretarial school plans to open a satellite
office in Oneonta by next September in response to a
local call for better training opportunities for office
workers.
The Utica School of Commerce, a two-year businesses
school that offers associate degrees in office
skill areas, has plans to offer a one-year diploma in
the city.
Barbara Hess, a training coordinator for the Otsego
County Job Training office, said officials from the
school asked her office to determine if the secretarial
and business program was needed in this area.
She said the school will develop a program to meet
the needs of employees in the area, who indicated that
there is a shortage of properly trained office workers
in the job market.
Robert Whittemore, chamber general manager, said
the officials have narrowed their search for space
down to about six sites. He said they plan to open several
classrooms in 1,500 to 2,000 square feet of space.
He said the program will employ about 20 to 25 parttime
teachers and a small full-time office staff.
The school, founded in Utica, in 1896, is accredited
by the state Education Department.
