The National Soccer Hall of Fame and Oneonta Auto Imports will co-sponsor this year's Mayor's Cup tournament, which had been sponsored since its inception in 1976 by the city.
The nation's oldest, continuous Division One soccer tournament, the late summer contest has tentatively been renamed "The Mayor's Cup Tournament-Suburu Classic," said Mayor David Brenner, who will remain honorary chairman.
Oneonta is not bowing out of the tournament, though the city failed to earn a profit on the event last year, said Brenner. The city will continue to provide support services, and the soccer games will still be played at Damaschke Field in Neahwa Park, he said.
"We just felt the Hall of Fame was in a better position to publicize the event and find corporate sponsors" than the city said Joseph Bernier, the city's community development director.
Dietmar Jaeck, president of Oneonta Auto Imports, has agreed to sponsor the event this year and contribute $7,500. About two months ago, Jaeck and Vic Porto, the Soccer Hall's public relations director, agreed to terms.
This year's tournament will take place Sept. 11 and 12. The University of Virginia and Boston University soccer teams will play against teams from Hartwick College and the State University College at Oneonta. Four high school boys' and girls' teams, with a total of about 200 players, will also compete in separate tournaments.

COOPERSTOWN _ Mr. and Mrs. George J. Ealer of Short Hills, N.J., have opened an antique shop, "The Carriage House," in Cooperstown.
The Carriage House is located at 147 Main St., adjacent to the Hitching Post Restaurant, and in association with Mr. and Mrs. Cyril T. George, owners of the Hitching Post.
The Carriage House will feature early Americana, and will handle a general line of antiques selected from the decorator's viewpoint.
Mrs. Ealer is the daughter of Mrs. E. Lynn Fisher of Springfield, N.J., and the late M. Fisher, who founded Camps Otsego and Chenango on Otsego Lake in 1914. Mr. and Mrs. Walter A. Harbig are presently acting as directors of both camps.
