COOPERSTOWN _ An official decision to close the District 9 school at Middlefield Center, reached as the Cooperstown Central School Board of Education met Wednesday night, was announced yesterday.

The school, unused since 1948, may be placed up for sale if any resident of the district so requests.

Then a meeting of the school district will be called and the decision to sell or retain the property will be placed before the eligible voters, according to Supervising Principal Nicholas J. Sterling of CCS.

Otherwise, Mr. Sterling explained, the school must be retained for five years (dating from Wednesday night) before the Board of Education can offer it for sale.

The last teacher to hold classes at Middlefield Center was Mrs. Floyd Eckler, now a member of the faculty at the Cooperstown elementary school.
