LEAF Inc. is sponsoring a Fine Arts Contest and a Poetry Competition to help foster awareness of how fashion, media and culture influence addiction issues in the region. The theme of the contest is "Above the Influence," and LEAF is seeking artists to create striking images and inspire conversations about how culture shapes behavior in both negative and positive ways.
The Art Contest is open to all artists and there is an "18 and under" entry level as well as an "Adult" entry level. In addition to a $500 grand prize, there will be two $300 first prizes, two $200 second prizes and two $100 third prizes presented. The artwork will be judged by several accomplished local artists and curators including David Hayes, son of the sculptor by the same name. The work may be figurative or abstract, two-dimensional or three-dimensional and in any medium. The deadline for entering is Wednesday, April 18, and an opening and show of the artwork is being planned for Friday, April 27, at the Community Arts Network of Oneonta Gallery in the Wilber Mansion. After the show, selected pieces will be toured to several local galleries and displayed at locations on Main Street in Oneonta.
LEAF is not looking for "poster art" but rather strong imagery that will highlight the conflict between what people hope and dream for themselves and the cultural influences driving unhealthy and destructive behavior in our society, according to a media release. The artwork does not have to include addiction imagery and artists are being encouraged to use their own imaginations about how to approach the subject matter.
The LEAF Poetry Competition will offer a $300 first prize, a $200 second prize and a $100 third prize for poems on the same theme. The finalists will be read at the gallery opening on April 27 and prizes will be announced that night.
LEAF Inc. is a not for profit organization dedicated to helping create a community where children and adults can live in healthy environments that are free from the effects of alcoholism and other addictive diseases. LEAF is being supported in its efforts with funding from OASAS, the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.
