COOPERSTOWN _ Burly Ken Williams and bouncing Bob Beebe won the Great Wheelbarrow Race on Main Street in Cooperstown Wednesday topping a field of five entrants in the July 4 classic.
Williams was the "driver" and Beebe the passenger as they got off to a good start on Pioneer Street, cleared the first turn at the Main Street flagpole, and led all the way through Pioneer Alley and back to the finish line on Pioneer.
Ken Watkins, with Ed Skriven, 69, in the saddle, finished second.
The winners walked off with a bottle of champagne and a $20 prize.
Watkins, one of the organizers, dubbed the race the 4th of July Classic and said it was, "just a way to celebrate the holiday."
